Zachary slept pretty well that night. His shortened sleep the night before, the action of the day, and the satisfaction of having cracked the case all combined, and he fell asleep soon after his head hit the pillow. There was no need to be replaying the video in his head this time. He had a little bit of anxiety from thinking about exactly how he would explain it all to the police detective when he finally got around to calling Zachary back. Still, he could suppress this worry enough that it didn’t keep him awake.

He still awoke before Kenzie, but without nightmares or other sleep disturbances. He rose quietly and moved out to the living room so that he wouldn’t wake her, and started in on his inbox and the other work awaiting him. He had more than just the Barnburners file to work on, and now that the burglary case was solved, he knew he needed to get back to the rest.

There were still no calls or messages from the McNichols. Maybe they didn’t think he would find anything, so they didn’t see the need to call him back immediately. Or maybe their phones were still down and they had no idea that he’d been trying to reach them. Either way, the property was safe for the moment. It would wait until they got back to him.
